Pulleys Used in Cars

You can find two major types of pulleys in your vehicle. These include tensioner pulleys and idler pulleys. Tensioner pulleys maintain the proper tension and alignment of belts, such as the serpentine belt. Idler pulleys, on the other hand, guide a belt or chain around a specific path. The idler pulley bolted in the engine guides the timing belt in the correct direction.

When to Replace a Belt

Serpentine belts power certain parts such as the alternator, A/C compressor, and the power steering. Once any or all of these parts malfunction, there’s a good chance the belt is the culprit. A ticking or clicking sound from your engine and frequent misfires signal a bad timing belt. But in general, if any of the belts show signs of severe wear, consider finding a replacement.
