The constant velocity axles, or CV axles, are responsible for transmitting the energy from the engine to your vehicle’s wheels. The engine sends power to the transmission, then the transmission transfers it to the wheels. CV axles transmit torque to the drive wheels, moving the car forward or backward. Inside the CV axle, there’s a joint encased in a rubber boot filled with grease that allows for the wheels to steer and travel vertically with the suspension.

How Can You Tell If Your CV Axles Are Going Bad?

The most common sign of a bad CV axle is a clicking noise when turning. This is most pronounced in sharp turns at low speeds. You can also experience a clunking sound when you accelerate or decelerate. If you suspect damage to the CV axle, check for grease on the inside of the tire. Since both joints are protected with a grease-filled rubber boot, grease can leak out due to cracks or tears on the boot.

Is It Easy to Replace a Car Axle?

Most mechanics can replace a CV axle in a few hours. It requires elevating the vehicle, securing it with jack stands, removing the wheel, and detaching various suspension system parts. Replacing a CV axle also deals with the transmission side of the axle, so it’s crucial to work carefully so as not to damage any transmission parts.
