Tread: The part of the tire that comes in contact with the road.

Belt plies: Two or more strong layers of cord under the tread of the tire.

Inner liner: Rubber compound that’s bonded to the inside of the cord body. It acts like an inner tube, however, modern tires no longer have inner tubes.

Cord body: Provides strength to the tire. Fabric cords, or ‘body plies’ make up the cord body, and they’re usually made of polyester.

Beads: Made of copper, brass, or bronze-plated steel wires, they hold the tire to the outer edge of the wheel.

Bead filler: Stiff section made of rubber compound that provides stability to the lower sidewall and bead area.
