What Is The Purpose of Drum Brakes?
A drum brake is a brake system that utilizes the friction caused by a set of brake shoes or pads that press outward against a rotating brake drum. The brake drum is a bowl-shaped part of the system that moves with the wheel and axle.
When you apply the brakes, the shoe lining pushes outward against the inner surface of the brake drum. The resulting friction then slows or stops the rotation of the wheel and axle. This process generates tremendous heat. Over time, this causes ‘brake fade’, which is when your vehicle loses stopping power due to reduced friction between the linings and the drum. When your car’s braking system is weakened, accidents are more likely to happen.
