Purpose of a Serpentine Belt

The serpentine belt transfers power from the crankshaft to the engine’s accessories. These accessories can include the alternator, air-conditioning system, power steering pump, and the water pump. Without a functioning serpentine belt, your car’s charging system will not work, nor will the cabin and engine cooling systems be able to operate. The serpentine belt is also called the drive belt.

How Often to Replace a Serpentine Belt on a Ford

Expect to replace the serpentine belt after 50,000 to 100,000 miles. With that said, be on the lookout for early signs of failure on the serpentine belt. It can fail prematurely if it’s misaligned on the pulleys or exposed to extreme heat and humidity.

Signs of a Failing Serpentine Belt

Here are symptoms of a bad serpentine belt:

Check engine light turns on

Engine accessories, such as A/C, power steering, and alternator aren’t working

Squeaking or chirping sound under the hood

Smell of burnt rubber near the engine

Visible signs of belt wear, such as glazing, tearing, or missing teeth
